Advice from a Modern Jewish Grandma
Mother's Advice

I just finished speaking with my daughter and again I have to laugh.  Her 9-year old daughter is at sleep-away camp and for the first week was a little homesick.  Very normal.  I listened to my daughter and noticed how upset she was that my granddaughter was not happy.  I tried hard (and think I succeeded) in telling her that Sofie would be fine after the first week and now, of course, she does love everyone and everything about camp.

Meredith also told me about the letter she wrote to Sofie advising her on coping with her first bout of homesickness.  "Do you hear advice from the past come out of your mouth?" I asked her.  "Yes," she joked.  "But the difference is, Sofie actually listens to the advice!  It took me over 30 years to realize you were right."

There is something unique about a mother-daughter relationship.  Daughters may not listen to their moms, but once they become a mom, it is amazing how smart we get!

I'm so lucky to be blessed with two great daughters.  Now I can be part of the advice Meredith gives to Sofie.

Have a great summer.  And remember, as my mother always said, "I wish for you, everything you wish for yourself."

By the way, if you have any questions, or have ideas for something you’d like me to write about, email my daughter and she’ll tell me (I’d say to email me, but…well…let’s just say I’d won’t be giving advice on how to use a computer.)
